Looking for recommendations for "filling the gap" in the Oxford History of the United States

by EUPW

I've read three volumes of the Oxford History of the United States and I'm thinking about reading the whole series, but they haven't yet published volumes covering the period from the Civil War to the Great Depression. Are there any similar works that cover this period?

So far I have found H.W. Brands's American Colossus, which covers 1865-1900, but seems to focus on economic issues a little more than I might like.

You might like Jackson Lears' Rebirth of a Nation, which covers the Gilded Age and Progressive eras. It's a part of the very good Penguin History of the United States series.

Other really good overviews on the Gilded Age/Progressive era are:

Neill Painter, Standing at Armageddon

Michael McGerr, A Fierce Discontent

Alan Trachtenberg, The Incorporation of America

Eric Foner's Reconstruction: America's Unfinished Revolution is the go-to book on the Reconstruction era.

As for the Great Depression, it's covered in the David Kennedy's book in the Oxford History series, Freedom from Want
