The only nations of comparable strength to the East were China and Japan, both of whom were suffering from severe internal issues (isolationist Japan, semi-colonized and opium addicted China) at the time. There was virtually nothing stopping the Russian advance to the East. However, when China and Japan got over their problems, they fought in multiple wars against the Russians.
