Historians, do you have any tips or advice for verifying the legitimacy of a website when researching a historical topic?

by awesomecubed

There are a few topics I want to be more informed on. I currently have next to zero knowledge on them, and it's difficult to determine if what I am reading is legitimate, or done by conspiracy theorist. While this question does not fall within the scope of /r/AskHistorians, I figure there is no community on Reddit that would be more suited to answering.

Thanks in advance!

I hate to say this, but my general rule is not to trust websites. If it's published on a site with a .edu or .gov domain, then it's reasonably trustworthy, but even .org is not to be trusted out of hand. If it's written by a credentialed academic historian, that's good. But overall, you're better off reading books and articles published by academics, or at least your friends here at /r/askhistorians!
