What could the later Roman emperors have done to prevent the fall of the empire?

If you were an emperor in the late imperial period, what could you have done better? Could a string of gifted emperors restored the empire to its height or was it destined for failure no matter what the emperors did?

I don't think this is an appropriate question for this subreddit. Perhaps /r/historywhatif would be a better fit.

Any answer would be complete speculation, given you could give a hypothetical leader any set of traits or skills, as well as fudging what resources he would have available. The vagueness of the term "late imperial period" doesn't make it any easier.
