A lot of leaders have set about to standardize and/or nationalize a language.

For instance Ataturk changed what was called Ottoman Turkish to modern Turkish. He did this by changing the writing system from Arabic script to the Latin script, but by also trying to take the borrowed Arabic words of Ottoman Turkish and replacing them with Turkish equivalents. Essentially his goal was to make the Turkish language Turkish and more accessible to more people. To my understanding when writing there's less use of Arabic derived words - so those words are gone - but in some regions those words are still used.
