I tried to answer this here. In my view, he was neither, at least not in the way that we now understand the terms "Macedonian" or "Greek". Concepts of ethnicity have changed drastically over the centuries, as has the composition of every known ethnic group; nationhood in the modern sense was altogether alien to the ancient world.
