How did the English "pound" come be known as the same word as an imperial "pound"

It originally corresponded to the value of one pound (weight) of Sterling silver. This is also why the symbol for the currency is a stylised letter L, which is short for Libra, meaning 'pound of weight' in Latin. That's also why the start sign Libra uses a set of scales as it's symbol.
