Especially when it comes to Middle Eastern people/groups, I hear about people arguing over the Armenian Genocide but I was always taught that it was 100% a fact. Thanks in advance.
Hi there, so this is a fairly popular question and the Armenian genocide has its own part of the FAQ
Not in the FAQ (yet) is this wonderful post by /u/yodatsracist which adresses your question quite directly.
This is not meant to discourage anyone from answering you, but I figured you might be interested in those threads.
A couple questions relevant to the topic:
Looking at the event in historiography, why does it seem that so little attention was paid to it all for several decades afterwards? Is that even a fair assessment? If so, did that lag have an effect on the discourse? Has the interplay around the events been more-or-less consistent and similar to today's? Does the Turkish government's stance have a significant effect on research on the subject (e.g., limiting access to the Ottoman archives; restrictive visa criteria)?
This question might be better suited for its own thread, but what is the debate around the terminology, i.e., is it incorrect or otherwise disingenuous to term it a example of ethnic cleansing, rather than genocide? Firstly, given the pan-Turkic aims associated with the C.U.P., can one claim at all that the aim was to eliminate the Armenians in a specific geographic area, rather than anywhere they might reside, regardless as to whether that was in, say, Australia? Is this distinction one entirely of semantics and politics? Did the fact that the term "genocide" gained currency about fifty years before "ethnic cleansing" made its rounds factor in into the Armenian Genocide's question of terminology in any capacity? (That is, is the reason that there is resistance to terming it an ethnic cleansing largely due to the idea that, by terming it as such, we would be somehow "downgrading" or marginalizing the horrors, since they've already been known as the Armenian Genocide for decades?)
Hello everyone,
