Before the Europeans settled, did the native americans have a "Lingua Franca"?

If they did, which one was it, and why?

If not, why did no language gain this status?

For those who don't know, a Lingua Franca is a language where you can reliably get around speaking that language. Kind of like English is in Europe today.

Are you talking about a specific area of North or South America? Or just a Lingua Franca in the Americas in general?
