How were the Chartreuse Mountains named after?

by af7202a

I know that the color chartreuse was named after the liqueur, and the liqueur was named after the monastery, and the monastery was named after the mountain range.... but how did the mountain range get the name?

Please let me know if this isn't the correct sub Reddit to post this on! Thanks!

It was named after the local village.

As for the village... So, this information is not very-well sourced. I got it from the website of the Carthusians Order (also named after the mountain). If anyone has anything better, I'd be happy to know.

To give a brief summary of what they explain there (in french) :

It is not a word of latin origin, and there are several hypothesis concerning its origin :

  • it may come from the name of a local Gaul tribe, the caturiges, (from catu, fight and riges, kings)

  • or it may come from the provençal calma rossa, meaning "a meadow that has been plowed"

Again, I hope someone can come up with a better answer !

EDIT : As I said, not necessarily the best source, but its here :
