Can you compare the rise and fall of the Roman Empire with the American Empire and if so where is the United States of America in comparison along the "stages"?

As a word of caution, this question is quite problematic.

Firstly, there's the immense time distance involved. We're talking the 20th/21st Century here, is it really fruitful to compare it to a radically different entity around 1500 years in the past? There's a huge difference of culture, society and technology. You're effectively trying to compare different worlds.

If we think about comparative history, it's usually to compare societies that share historical periods or similar cultural conditions. Which is almost impossible if we take examples from the ancient and the modern world. They're simply too different.
