I can not fathom a five line answer to a question inquiring about e.g. the historical origins of Nazi antisemtism. Also, what would be the point of five line answer to this question? In fact, what would be the whole point to study the subject of history if all questions about it could just be answered in five lines.
Coming from someone supposedly versed in academic writing, the idea that these questions could be answered in a thorough fashion in 5 lines strikes me as a bit strange, to be honest.
Hi there,
AskHistorians exists to provide comprehensive, expert-level answers to questions about history. Says so right on the tin:
/r/AskHistorians aims to provide serious, academic-level answers to questions about history.
and
Answers in this subreddit are expected to be of a level that historians would provide: comprehensive and informative. As such, all answers will be assessed against the standards of Historiography and Historical Method. You should cite or quote sources where possible. A good answer will go further than a simple short sentence. As described here, "good answers aren't good just because they are right – they are good because they explain. In your answers, you should seek not just to be right, but to explain."
The reason that questions aren't answered in 5 lines is that it's generally speaking not possible to provide an answer in 5 lines about a large historical question.
I've considered pretty much every answer I've gotten on here very helpful. The thing is, if you provide the 5 lines of text, then you've scratched the surface. Any question that's not simply asking for a fact like a date, benefits from an answer that's rich in context and detail. People come here for those attributes of an answer, to tap into the wealth of knowledge of the answering users. Could you provide an example of a post that you find that misses the point?
EDIT: I mean an answer according to the standards of AH
Five lines!? Do you mean five paragraphs? Because I mean, yes, sure, there are questions which really don't lend themselves to in-depth responses and can be dispensed with in short order. I responded to one very recently in fact, as the answer to the question was really a hard "No". But I honestly can't understand how you think that "no single answer would take more than 5 lines" is a valid position, especially for someone who claims that they have studied academic writing. Some questions are simple to answer. Some aren't. Some require an entire dissertation to just sratch the surface of information.
Even putting aside the fact that dozens of questions are asked here daily which quite literally could not begin to be answered in such a short span, you seem to misunderstand what the entire purpose of this subreddit it. If someone is seeking the barebones, no-frills, tl;dr answer to their questions, this simply isn't the place to come. Even for a question which might be able to be summed up in five lines, people come here to ask questions because they want more than the bare minimum. They want to get information about the broader context, and the occasional digression into related matters that aren't necessary to answer the question, but nevertheless provide an interesting illustration.
If you are looking for "five line" answers you're welcome to try /r/AskHistory or /r/History, but simply put, you won't find many of those here.
I wrote two pages of information on why, from a Homeland Security standpoint and general analysis of motives and techniques, suicide attacks by Islamist terrorists began to happen. This is not something that can be addressed in 5 lines because there SOOO much that needs to be address. What kind of attacks were happening before this purported tipping point, what caused the first suicide attack to happen? Do we mean suicide as in self-murder or meaning certain death and accepting that?
I would be interested to see what kind of academic writing you have done simply because I would love to only write 5 lines to answer a question. My last history class required essays for the test that would have to have at least two pages of writing (hand written) not only providing the context, but the supporting information, conclusions and my teacher's favorite question "so what?"
I did study academic writing and been writing it for 4 years and this kind of answer would fail the requirements and the achievements of an academic educational essay.
I'm pretty sure writing only 5 lines would get you a big fat fail in a university-level final exam essay question.
It's simply not possible to go into any kind of relevant details or depth with 5 lines. It'd be hard enough to cover a single case study in 5 lines.
