How do I conduct a decent interview with my Grandmother before she loses her memory?

by Zenquin

My grandmother is steadily losing her memory and I would like to ask her about her life while I still have the chance. The problem is that I do not really know how to interview her beyond "So, that Great Depression really sucked, huh?". I figured that professional historians would be trained in these matters so I come to you for advice. I already missed the chance with my other grandparents and don't want to miss this.
If more specific information is helpful, she was born on July 4th 1926 in San Francisco and has lived her whole life in the Bay Area.

I'm not a historian, and I hope a more useful post follows this.

I'm a teacher, and a useful tool I have used with students is story corps. https://storycorps.me/

It will help you with formulating questions and you can even record the interview with the app.

Hope this helps.

Hi, hopefully someone can drop by with some advice that might be helpful regarding the San Francisco area, but meanwhile, do check out this post for some general guidance:

You might also search the sub for "title:interview grand*" to have a look at earlier suggestions to similar requests (I'd pick out a few for you, but am on my phone these days)
