in the 2010 film when Robin Hood is about to desert Richard's army one of the Merry men asks about their pay, Robin points out that they hardly ever get paid anyway. Did crusaders actually get payment (I thought they were in it for salvation)? if "yes" is there any basis for Richard being stingy?
This isnt an answer to your question but, iirc, in the movie, they desert his army in France, whilst warring against the French. They werent on crusade when they deserted
