Chain or plate, sword, dagger, helm, horse, pike, etc?
Could your average peasant save or work enough to outfit himself thusly?
First off, in which country would you be located?
Secondly, whenabouts? Because 'medieval times' can stretch from the 5th to 15th centuries, depending on who you ask, and encompasses a huge swathe of technological changes.
Finally, what sort of soldier are you outfitting? I ask because the equipment you've given - heavy armour, a sword and dagger, a helmet, a horse, and a pike - belong to a bunch of different types of soldiers. A 14th century man-at-arms could be wearing heavy armour and carrying a sword and poleaxe, or they could be in heavy armour, with a lance and mace, and riding a horse, for example. An English archer of the same period would have their bow, a sidearm of some sort, and some light armour and a helmet for defence. A 10th century Scandinavian warrior might have a spear, axe, knife, helmet, and shield, or if they were particularly wealthy, chain armour and a sword (or two, if Egils saga is to be used as a guide) replacing the axe in their kit.
As a follow up question, would such equipment be essential for a family to have, or was protection provided elsewhere? Would the fighting equipment be a worthwhile purchase?
