In the days when it took weeks or months to cross the Atlantic by ship, what did passengers do for entertainment en route?

I read a reference to John Adams sailing for France during the American revolution, and it made me wonder what he and other people at the time would do to avoid going stir-crazy cooped up in a tiny, overcrowded boat for weeks on end.

John Adams probably had a relatively enjoyable trip given his wealth and status. Can I add on to the question how the average traveler would be entertained or controlled on such a trip?
