Just wanted to add that I'm not referring to today's scene but when was the last time we had this many right-wing nationalists take the world stage. Also if anyone wants to recommend books I'm so open to that too!

Look to post-WWI politics, as many right wing dictatorships consolidated power or grew out of the aftermath. The ad hoc democracies of Weimar and newly-formed Eastern European nation-states carved out of the dissolved Austro-Hungarian empire didn't stay democratized for long. Fascist Italy led the way, and eagerly adopted the term "totalitarian" to describe its governance.
