Like many others, I've been playing a lot of battlefield 1 recently and it's made me curious enough to want to read more about the war. I looked through the book list in the sidebar and found another post asking the same question, but when I looked through those books on amazon, it seemed that most of them were focused on the British perspective, or at least the Western Front. I'm actually far more curious about the war in the Balkans, the war on the eastern front, and the ottoman participation in the war. Are there any books that focus on these seemingly lesser known parts of the war? Preferably, I'd also like to know more about those parts of the world leading up to the war, and how the war changed them. It seems like WWI almost had a larger impact on the world than wwii did in some ways, and I never would have guessed that.
Sure, there are two very good books about the fighting on the Ottoman fronts that came out in 2015:
Sean McMeekin's Ottoman Endgame
and Eugene Rogan's The Fall of the Ottomans.
Both books also cover the lead-up to the war in the Ottoman empire as well as the aftermath of the war up to about 1924. I probably prefer the former for being more detailed but the latter is probably the more readable introduction.
As far as the outbreak of the war, Christopher Clark's The Sleepwalkers does a very good job of both walking through how and why the war broke out as well as focusing on its Balkan origins.
The fighting in the Balkans and along the Russian front are not subjects I'm familiar with, but perhaps someone else can chime in.
