Ah, I love the history of the future!
Here's an earlier answer of mine that looks at literary visions of a futuristic world from the Middle Ages through the 18th century, with a strong focus on the technological rather than social side of things.
Outside of religious prophecy, it actually took Western writers a surprising amount of time to turn the nascent ideology of progress into visions of the actual future. Instead, they spend a couple of centuries primarily projecting their idealized or futuristic technologies onto alternate worlds--parallel universes (Margaret Cavendish), the moon (Johannes Kepler), faraway islands (Francis Bacon).
