Where did Nazi Germany get its cigarettes from?

by darkfang77

If cigarettes were still part of the regular soldier's rations, where did Germany find a large and stable supply of tobacco from? It couldn't have come from the Americas, or Asia, or Africa.

Southeast Europe and Asia Minor, largely. These areas produced (and continue to produce) tobacco, especially the aromatic "Oriental" varieties, which was a major source of invaluable foreign currency in the pre-WW2 period. The whole region was occupied by the Axis (Yugoslavia), allied with them (Bulgaria) or neutral (Turkey, right up to the last few months of the war).

There is a prior post in this sub about Nazi efforts to discourage smoking, with brief mention of local brands they were receiving as rations.
