What happened to the kinds of upper class clubs that often show up in Victorian fiction?

In many short-stories, films and other fiction set during the 19th and early 20th century in Britain the characters encounter clubs. They're typically physical places populated with upper-class men sitting around fireplaces and drinking whiskey/smoking cigars. Do these kinds of club houses still exist or did they evolve into something else? If not, why did they die out?

They still exist - White's, East India Club etc still operate, have clubhouses and most are still exclusively male clubs.
