My friend is a Indian Catholic native to Tamil Nadu, all 4 of her grandparents were born in Burma, where they were refugees. What historical event caused South Indian Catholics to become refugees in Burma?

Sorry I'm unclear what you mean. It sounds like you've got your narrative mixed up a bit.

Were her grandparents refugees from Burma? This makes a bit more sense since there was a large Indian mercantile community in British Burma, which became the target of Burmese Nationalists as they were essentially seen as another tool of British dominance, as was the case with Indian merchants in Uganda and so forth.

When the military dictator Ne Win seized power in Burma in the early 1960s he nationalized a lot of these Indian businesses and expelled the owners, most of whom went back to India as refugees.
