How well-fed was an average western European medieval peasant? Were they regularly hungry and on the brink of starvation? Or were they usually fairly well-fed?

I understand that various contingent factors could cause famine, but on average, how well-fed were medieval peasants? I've heard some (non-historians) claim that they were barely fed enough to survive and work, and that they were always on the brink of starvation, but I have a hard time believing this.
