Sorry if that's a poorly worded question!
I guess the question is would more intense training in the history and culture of a certain period which also involves the study of the culture(s)' language and literature be more or less beneficial than a more general education in history?
Do you mean as a history degree or learning historical context as part of another degree.
For example, my degree is in English. My university had a fairly rigid system which meant you went essentially in chronological order from the Anglo-Saxons to Postmodern Lit over the course of three years which meant that I got a fairly comprehensive, though broad rather than deep overview of English history. It's certainly not the same as an actual history course though.
