Are there English dialects?

by Manny_mermaid

Not sure if this questions works here. But. Having trouble distinguishing between accents and dialects. A friend said she was grasping Spanish and catalonian and said both were pretty damn similar(95% was thrown around). I reckon there are some fucked English speakers who understand each other less. What's the deal? I looked it up Google and got no satisfactory answer.

Linguist here:

A dialect is a variation of a language that is mutually intelligible with the standard variety. An example of an English dialect would be Scottish english and British English. So yes there are dialects of English.
