Were darker skinned Asians discriminated against?

by meatballthequeer

In the western world there was for a time a rather dominant view that darker skinned, or African people were inferior to white Europeans.

Have there ever been similar racist views in Asia, to say the far south east Asians or Indians who had quite darker skin to their northern counterparts? Was there slavery or other actions based on that idea?

Very much so. I won't talk about current complexion prejudices among Indians but historically the preference for fair skins was also a thing- all the way back in the Rig Veda a distinction is made between the arya and the dasa, comparing the righteous, holy, fair skinned god fearing Arya to the slavish, dark, dangerous Dasa.

Note- it isn't as simple as a North vs South Indian thing. While Northerners tend fairer and Southerners tend darker theres quite a lot of complexion variation within specific Indian ethnic groups, to the extent that varying complexions can often be seen within families.
