Looking for help with finding war records of Grandfather who served in the British army during WWII

by jja2850a

I apologize if this is an inappropriate question to ask on this subreddit.

My grandfather was a Polish national who was sent to a Soviet gulag camp in 1940. When the Soviet Union joined the allied side of the war in 1941, he was released and joined the British army (he was stationed in North Africa). During a recent visit to the U.S. Holocaust Memorial and Museum in Washington, DC, I was told by one of the librarians working in the database area that the Imperial War museums in the United Kingdom would likely have records of his combat service.

My question is, how would one suggest going about trying to obtain such records from that particular institution. I appreciate any and all advice that you can give, and will be happy to provide more information if necessary. Thank you for your time and considertaion!

Hello there! As your question is related to looking for identification/information regarding military personnel, our Guide on Military Identification may be of use to you. It provides a number of different resources, including how to request service records from a number of national agencies around the world, as well as graphical aids to assist in deciphering rank, unit, and other forms of badges or insignia. While the users here may still be able to lend you more assistance, hopefully this will provide a good place to start!
