Historians have suggested that Hitler wanted to reinstate the abdicated Edward VIII to the throne in order to act as a puppet, and to create a fascist Britain. Edward VIII was known to be reasonably sympathetic to the Nazis in the lead up to WW2 (there are home movies of him instructing the current queen in giving the Nazi salute), and in 1940 was "reassigned" to the governorship of the Bahamas in order to keep him well away.
