In the 1970s, there was a big trend in baseball for the creation of enclosed stadiums with astro-turf, so much so that the newly formed Houston team named themselves the Astro's. Why did the fad die down? What prompted the shift back towards more traditional ballparks?

Actually, that's a little bit backwards - "AstroTurf" is named after the Houston Astros, because it was first used in their enclosed stadium, the Astrodome, in 1965 and Monsanto knows a good marketing opportunity when they see one (http://www.astroturf.com/about/history/). Also, the reason for a dome in Houston is a practical one - in June, July, and August it is often in the 90s(F), with high humidity, a good chance of rain, and lots of mosquitoes, all factors which discourage attendance.

The Astros were originally the Houston Colt .45's, but changed to their current name also in 1965. This was done to avoid legal action with the Colt Firearms Company over merchandising, and to reflect Houston's central role in the on-going space race. 1 2
