It's probable that someone on either side could act as an interpreter. Scandinavia and the British isles are actually relatively close, it only takes a day and a night for a Viking ship to cross from Denmark to England, and besides raiders there were traders from both England and Scandinavia that would have had plenty of contact. It's not like they were encountering a culture with which they had never had any contact before.
