Today, Islamic military forces are often thought of as particularly dedicated and self-sacrificial. Is this a new phenomenon or have non-Muslims (esp. Christians) historically believed it for a long time?

Could you provide some cites to support the contention that they are considered "dedicated and self-sacrificial"? And also clarify what you mean by "Islamic Military Forces"? I don't know if there's any such thing.

If you mean Arab military forces, I think a lot more has been written about why they fare so poorly and why they lose wars. Or did you mean non-Arab Muslim militaries, like Pakistan or Indonesia? Could you point to where this impression exists?

Or maybe you're not talking about regular militaries, maybe you're talking about jihadist organizations?
