if everything you survived on / traded for / sold / bought / acquired meant dealing with and conversing with the Chinese over a hundred years

At the same time, those same Chinese traders starting teaching your community about a horrifying existance where when you die you burn in hell forever and ever unless you follow their teachings that would allow you avoid this eternal damnation - sure you can say you have european reason and education behind you but the chinese have eloquent speakers and they tie all the trades and business you make to the religion they profess - they set up schools to teach your children about their ideas and all businesses that you create or want to take part in are all chinese speaking

at one point it would be natural to become fluent in Chinese
