Help a buddy identify flea market finds?

by FORu2SLOW

My friend has a collection of what he believes to be Soviet Era pins but he wants some kind of confirmation or details about them. I'm not sure if this is the right sub for it, but I figured it was worth a shot.

Yup, these are Soviet pins alright.

In order from left to right:

  • Can't make out the text, a souvenir pin of some kind.

  • An Oktoberist (октябрёнок) pin. The Oktoberists were a youth organization (ages 7-9)

  • Your penny

  • A pin commemorating the city of Murmansk and the Lenin atomic icebreaker.

  • A pin commemorating the city of Ulyanovsk.

  • OSVOD RSFSR (Russian lifeguard society)

  • Young Pioneer pin

  • 100 years of something (probably a writer)

  • A pin with what looks like Lenin

  • Can't make out the text

  • Can't make out the text, but there's a Lenin face on it and a number, likely commemorating an anniversary.

  • Another Young Pioneer star

  • "Leningrad", the pin is upside down

  • "Institute of Proper Ladies 1764 Peterburg" This one is post-Soviet, naturally.

  • Can't make out the text

  • 50 years of VLKSM commemorative pin

  • RSFSR pin

  • Constitution of the USSR pin

  • A regular VLSKM pin

This is the point where I scrolled down and saw 30 more images. I won't do them all, but I hope this gives you a good indication of what you have.

Collecting pins was a common hobby in the USSR. Some pins were issued for a specific achievement and worn with pride (Voroshilov's Marksman, Ready for Labour and Defense, university alumni "rhombus", etc), but a lot were simply souvenirs and you could just buy them. Most of yours are from the latter variety, aside from the youth organization ones (Oktoberists, Young Pioneers, VLKSM) and the ones that look like medals, which are VLKSM awards for excellence in labour.
