What were "roving parties" on the Australian frontier? Were they a real world version of "A Most Dangerous Game"?

I've been reading about the history of Melbourne's "founder", John Batman, and lots about his life in Tasmania is written about his taking part in "roving parties." I can't find a formal definition of a roving party, but it seemed to involve hunting native peoples.

Depending on time period it could be in reference to the hunting of Tasmanian aboriginals? A large amount of military and civilian personnel were involved

Great reply, thanks. Have you read the fictionalised account of Batman's time inVan Diemens Land, "The Roving Party?" If so do you recommend it?

having not read A Most Dangerous Game, what part of it are you referring to? what about it do you think relates to the Australian Frontier? (edit: wording)
