Hey there Historians! Hope you lovely gents and ladies are doing swell!
I've been wondering recently if the kind of widespread fear that's going around about Trump being president has happened before. I'm not talking about the (relatively) few people who were scared when Obama took office or things like that. I'm sure there is always a minority of people who end up biting their nails at the "other" candidate winning the election.
I would imagine Abraham Lincoln was pretty divisive (understatement) of course, but besides that.
So, has this kinda fear happened before? Was it as widespread?
Thank you in advance for taking the time to help answer the question to any who respond. Time is incredibly valuable and it should not go unappreciated. :)
Hiya,
While we have decided to approve this question as you're asking about past incidences of divisive US presidents and/or widespread, fearful or combative responses to incoming presidents, we'd like to remind all contributors that /r/AskHistorians maintains a No Current Events rule, excluding discussion of such incidents in comparison with events in the last twenty years. Any responses should focus wholly on events outside this time period.
