Just found this relevant story:
Ted Ngoy, "The Doughnut King", is a Cambodian man who moved to Southern California to escape the Khmer Rouge is credited with starting a chain of Cambodian owned doughtnut shops in California. As in the "Ask Chris" segment, Ngoy trained at Winchell's, but it does not seem like Winchell's was actively recruiting Cambodian refugees.
