Would like you to explain what did the picture was trying to say with the text beneath it: "Germany, France, Russia, Austria-Hungary, and Britain attempting to keep the lid on the simmering cauldron of imperialist and nationalist tensions in the Balkans to prevent a general European war...."
from here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Balkan_Wars
I also heard albeit it's anecdotal that Bulgaria was the real aggressor who caused the havoc. Can you explain that?
Also, why exactly was it a Serbian nationalist who assassinated the Austrian heir? What caused so much tension among Southern Slavs? (which leads back to my title question)
Also wouldn't mind any other good info or insight, maybe a crash course about this.
Last thing I want to know is how did these wars impact the 90s Yugoslavia conflicts.
At the time, the Austro-Hungarian Empire held Bosnia, Croatia and much of Serbia. Gavrilo Princip was a Serb but he wasn't a Serbian nationalist, he was a Yugoslav nationalist and a member of the Yugoslav nationalist group the Black Hand, as well as the revolutionary nationalist underground group known as Mlada Bosna (Young Bosnia). At his trial for killing the Archduke Franz Ferdinand, he said "I am a Yugoslav nationalist, aiming for the unification of all Yugoslavs, and I do not care what form of state, but it must be freed from Austria." which is a pretty concrete statement of his intentions.
