I think I remember hearing years ago that King Arthur and Camelot may have been loosely based on an actual person and I was wondering whether there's any truth to this? Really though, I'd enjoy reading any information on the history of the story. Thanks in advanced!

The short answer is: he may well have been a real person, but we have no evidence of the details of his life, and the stories we now associate with King Arthur were invented long after the real details of his life were forgotten.
