Why is burying the dead considered a major metric of prehistoric human cultural development?

I often read about how certain archaeological sites are important because they are the first evidence of a tribe/clan burying its dead.

Why is this so significant?

I think this is a question more suited for /r/AskAnthropology/ as the process of human burial rituals go back hundreds of thousands of years ago.
