In what ways is the American Revolution remembered in American society, and how has it been used (or abused) for political reasons?

by capperz412

I'm doing a module in American memory studies at university and I was just hoping for some insight from any Americans/experts in American history here to give me some pointers on where to start on a topic so fundamental to American identity (I'm British so I'm really not an expert). Thanks!

In the present there is of course Independence Day or the 4th of July.
There's also the occasional work of fiction like The Patriot or allusions to revolutionary patriotism in settings like Fallout 3.

Beyond that there are historic sites, museums, monuments, etc. There's reenactments and living history events or programs.

I suppose very recently there is the musical Hamilton.

When you say you don't know where to start, what specifically are you looking for? Causes or motivations for the rebellion or something else entirely?
