Wasn't it kinda the other way around during the Classical Antiquity?
You might find Foucault's "The History of Sexuality" interesting. In it, he compares side by side the attitudes of current (well, 1970's France) attitudes toward homosexuality/masculinity and ancient attitudes. Not only that, he also details the changing attitudes over time in both the ancient world and more contemporary times which shows that acceptance of sexuality is a fluid thing where certain acts and behaviors might be acceptable or not now but over time can flip.
It was sort of the other way around in antiquity as you say but it was within specific roles. What these roles were changed over time but lack of masculinity was generally tied with being in the role of a woman during sex.
