The Iraq war gets talked about a lot in us politics with one side say it was justified and the outer side saying it wasn't. I don't really want to take a side on that without knowing the actually history of his reign witch most people don't seem to know much about. Two of my friends got into a heated debate about it, one for the war the outer against witch got me curious about the topic.
I am looking for a history of him and his rule of Iraq. I am also looking for a good book on his opposition within Iraqi during his reign, in peculiar the kurds. Are there any good books on the kurds in general?
I am also curious about his family, there doesn't seem to be much information about them at least on the internet or wikipedia.
Joseph Sassoon's Saddam Hussein's Ba'th Party: Inside an Authoritarian Regime gives an incredibly comprehensive picture of life inside Iraq using troves of documents recovered during the US occupation. It provides a much more clear-eyed assessment than the often-recommended book by Kanaan Makiya, Republic of Fear.
Charles Tripp's A History of Iraq and Peter and Marion Sluglett's A History of Iraq since 1958 are both good overviews of modern Iraq, although Tripp's book focuses on more than Saddam's rule. I don't know enough about the Kurds to recommend specific books on them although they, along with other opposition groups, are discussed a bit in Tripp's and the Slugletts' books.
Hiya,
I'd just like to remind all contributors that under our 20 Year Rule, any discussions should be limited to no later than 1996.
Thanks.
