There's a popular perception that ancient Greek hoplites carried shields with decorations that indicated where they were from: an owl for Athens, a lambda for Sparta, etc. Was that really true? Was it universally true across Greece or just in certain places? During what time periods was this done? Do we have good information about what devices were used in particular places at different times? Really any information about this topic is appreciated.
