A family story tells that a close family member (who I met before she died but didn't hear this until after her death) was basically forced, as a teen, to marry a business associate of her father's. The groom was about nine years older than she was. This story has some fuzzy spots, as I'm not sure how the two men's businesses were related, or what kind of business the younger man would have been in that would make the father think that marrying his young daughter off to him would benefit him financially. How common or uncommon would an arranged marriage have been in the US, around 1930, among the working class or middle class? Would this have been likely to be accepted by the community?
Has anyone heard of arranged or forced marriages among whites in the USA in the early 1900s?
