follow-up: Who bought a car during that period? Did only people who truly need them buy them or were they a status symbol? And how was buying a car perceived by the local community? I remember my grandmother telling me her father had to go around the village and explain to everyone why he needed a car (painter) so he wouldn't be shunned by the community for flaunting his "wealth". This was in Belgium in 1938.
