Hey every one, bot sure if this is against the rules, but I took a look through the sub and could find a good answer. I also googled around a lot and would like to hear some real life experiances.
How did you become a Historian? Did you go to school for archeology or just history?
I'm asking because I'm interested in getting into the field. I'm 22 and after years of doing jobs I know what I really want to pursue. I just want to hear how every got to where they are and the path they took to get there.
Thanks!
Hi! I'm a history major in college, so while I'm technically not yet a historian I'm well on my way to being one--I'm actually almost done with school.
I got into the field via an archaeology summer camp when I was a child, digging up artifacts and learning about the history, as well as playing a videogame--Age of Empires.
Gradually I took an interest in military history and began making suits of mail and collecting swords. I've learned a lot and now have begun collecting antique samurai armor. My main interest besides military is Asia in the classical and Late antique world. I have a passion for writing as well, and have wanted to teach since I was seven, and all of these things put me on the path of becoming a historian.
I'm glad you're interested to become a historian. What field do you like?
I'm in grad school still, but I'm in public history (basically it means engaging the public in history) and that specialty is much more open to calling people historians. I've done/am doing some archival work and helped to create a ghost tour while in the program so far. I've also done some more traditional scholarship and have published a few articles in small journals and presented original research at a conference.
I kind of fell into history. It started out with me not wanting to go into college undeclared and deciding history was good cause I always did well in it. As time went on I got more involved in areas that would let me create and share what I've done. When picking grad school I knew it was fucking hard to get s job in academia so I looked for something still in history that had better job prospects and that's how I found public history
