Were there any secret and violent encounters between spies during the Cold War?

So I've been watching The Americans lately and it's got me wondering if, or how much, there were covert operations that ended up turning violent. I know it's a tv show and all that but it definitely seems plausible that that sort of thing happened at least a couple times.

Also, if anyone has any interesting and informative books that deal with espionage during the Cold War I'd love some suggestions. My interest is piqued on this subject at the moment.

Thanks!

While I can't recommend specific books, I'd recommend you check out the USMLM (United States Military Liason Mission) Unit History reports available for download at http://www.coldwarspies.com/reading_room/

All encounters the military liason personel, who essentially acted as some sort of official spy, had with authorities are usually in the first chapters of each report. Also interesting to see how deep into permanently restricted zones they penetrated.
