How did Mao and other early Chinese Communists justify most of their support coming from rural peasants, when Marx said the communist revolution would be launched by the proletariat?

Why would rural peasants not be considered part of the proletariat? Your average rural peasant would not have any ownership of the means of production and would rely on their own labor power as means of subsistence.
