I'm probably going to go back to school this Fall and history was always my favorite (and best) subject in school. I'm considering majoring in history when I go, but what jobs are there besides being a history teacher/professor? Is it a relatively open field, or do you have to claw your way into a good degree related job?
I know this isn't technically within the rules, but I'm hoping mods will let this slide cause I don't think there's a better subreddit to ask this question.
So I'm in a public history program which is a sub field of history specifically created in the 70s to get more history graduates jobs. The main areas of work that you can get with a public history degree is in museums, archives, oral history, cultural resources management, and historic preservation. Some of these areas, especially oral history, is very difficult to get a job in at all, others are difficult to get into depending on where you live and if you're not willing to relocate. The job prospects definitely aren't amazing, but they're worth looking into if you're really passionate about history, but if you're not it's not worth getting into cause it can be pretty competitive and the money usually isn't amazing either.
