Why did they care so much about covering up the facts, and destroying any evidence of what they had done? We're they actually ashamed of themselves?
What records are you referring to? The Germans actually saved most of their documents in salt mines, so much so that the prosecutors at the Nuremberg Trials had too many documents. In the first few chapters of "The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich", William L. Shirer describes how many documents were found and how many he was able to go through himself. Just looking at the references for his book makes you wonder why the Nazi's were so stereotypically German in their record keeping. If you mean their destroying of concentration camps and people/things associated with it, yes it seems as though many were simply trying to hide crimes committed.
